AI Software Rankings This Week: Four Different Leaders in 53 of 80 Categories

This week's Cooper Index, published as Edition 5, finds four different leaders across Best, Most Affordable, Easiest to Set Up, and Rising in 53 of 80 business software categories.

This week's Cooper Index, published as Edition 5, records what ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity recommend across 80 business software categories. The Aug 3 to Aug 9 measurement covers 2,771 ranked products, 7,594 Sources, and 28,959 Mentions. Sources count cited pages; Mentions count verified product-page mentions.

Every category produces four independent answers. Best measures the primary recommendation set, Most Affordable asks for value, Easiest to Set Up asks about implementation, and Rising tracks emerging choices. AIQ is a 1–100 recommendation-strength score inside one category and one question, not a universal product grade.

Changing the question changes the market

The clearest result this week is not a single dominant product. It is the absence of one. Fifty-three of 80 categories have four different leaders across Best, Most Affordable, Easiest to Set Up, and Rising; 26 have three leaders. CI/CD is the lone category with only two: GitHub Actions leads Best, Most Affordable, and Easiest to Set Up, while Dagger leads Rising. No category has one product leading all four questions.

That separation is the useful result, not noise to average away. A buyer asking for the best-known choice, the affordable choice, the quickest implementation, or the emerging choice is describing four different jobs. In most markets this week, the assistants answer with four different products.

Best moved, but not evenly

Twenty-five of the 80 Best rankings ended with a different leader than last week. Sales changed leader in five of ten categories; Marketing changed none. Support and HR changed three each. Finance, Productivity, and Engineering changed four each, while IT & Security changed two. The contrast matters: a quiet hub can sit beside a volatile one in the same measurement week.

Some of the moves were decisive. Salesforce Sales Cloud climbed from #6 to #1 in CRM. Trintech moved from #7 to #1 in Financial Close, and Aha! went from #8 to #1 in Product Management. This was not only churn around the edge of the Top 3.

Elsewhere, familiar challengers took the lead without the same dramatic leap: Document360 in Knowledge Base, Lattice in Performance Management, monday.com in Project Management, and 1Password in Password Managers each moved from #2 to #1.

Marketing is the useful counterexample. All ten Best leaders held their positions, yet nine of its ten categories still have four different leaders across the four questions. Stability in Best does not make a market one-dimensional.

Agreement needs a closer look

Fifty-six Best leaders appear in the category rankings of all four assistants. Nine appear in three, seven in two, and eight in only one. Eighteen Best leaders reach AIQ 100, which means every assistant places them #1 for that question. Broad presence is common; complete agreement is much rarer.

CRM is the warning label for reading a leader too casually. Salesforce Sales Cloud leads Best at AIQ 55 from a #1 position with ChatGPT alone. Salesforce is second at AIQ 45, but holds #1 with Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. “Leader” describes the published category-relative result; it does not automatically mean unanimity.
